We are Very Lucky
Our son, Logan, has been working with Cathy for just over a year now. Logan's twin sister, Audrey, has had the pleasure of Cathy’s care a slightly shorter time than that. Through the last year, we have noticed a definite improvement in all areas of the twin’s communication skills including verbal comprehensibility, aural comprehension, and overall learning skills including reading. Some of this can be marked back to inherent developmental growth and change in schools, but a large part we believe to be due to Cathy's good work. The twins worked with another SLP for years and, although a wonderful person and therapist in her own right, her play-based approach often made improvement in the kids hard to gauge. Cathy's approach is much more traditionally pedagogic and started with her conducting many diagnostic tests to get a clearer baseline to read/picture of the kid's abilities and issues. From there, she developed a very well-reasoned course of therapy for both Audrey and Logan and they continue to benefit from Cathy's skills and experience. Beyond her obvious professional expertise, Cathy has proven to be a kind and caring therapist and has extended herself when asked to participate in team meetings with our son's school. Cathy has also referred us most recently to an OT that we are beyond happy with, further proving her commitment to the overall well-being of her students.

Kate worked with my 7-year-old son for a period of about 6 months, helping him not only with speech therapy but also with phonics and writing. Before children learn to read and write, they must first develop phonological awareness—the ability to recognize that words are made up of smaller sound units (phonemes). This foundational skill allows students to break words into sounds and blend sounds into words. Strong phonological awareness supports sound-symbol relationships, which are essential for reading and writing. Literacy development depends on both decoding (connecting letters to sounds for reading) and encoding (translating sounds into written words for spelling).

The Five Pillars of Reading emphasize the importance of phonemic awareness and phonics in developing foundational literacy skills in young learners. When a child understands that words can be broken down into individual sounds, they have developed phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds within words. Phonics, by contrast, refers to the understanding that written letters (graphemes) represent those sounds. When children master phonics, they can independently decode unfamiliar words. Learn what reading levels are and explore how a test for reading levels helps determine your child’s current performance.

We offer a range of literacy assessments conducted by literacy specialists we work with. Based on your child’s profile, we select the most appropriate assessment tools. Evaluations are available both remotely and in person. These assessments identify strengths and areas of growth in decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling), as well as phonemic awareness, fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.

For early readers, literacy specialists evaluate letter-sound knowledge both in isolation and within words. Students are assessed on their ability to identify initial, medial, and final sounds across single- and multi-syllabic words. Reading samples are also used to measure fluency, expression, prosody, and accuracy. Spelling is evaluated using decodable words, nonsense words, and sight words. Based on these results, specialists develop targeted, evidence-based plans to improve reading and spelling performance.

Testing Support: SAT, ACT & AP Accommodations for Literacy-Based Challenges

Students with dyslexia, Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), or other language-based challenges often face barriers on standardized exams that do not reflect their true abilities. We provide comprehensive evaluations to support SAT, ACT & AP Accommodations. These evaluations generate the documentation required for accommodations such as extended time, separate testing environments, and assistive technology. Our team collaborates closely with families and schools to ensure accurate, timely submission of all materials.

For literacy tutoring provided by educators we work with, clear and up-to-date goals are required to ensure targeted, effective instruction.

If the literacy intervention cannot be justified by an ICD-10 code, the literacy intervention is considered educational and can be performed by educators we work with. New York State currently classifies dyslexia as a learning difference rather than a communicative disorder. Please note that many neuropsychological evaluations do not include detailed decoding and encoding goals. If these goals are not provided, our initial sessions will focus on developing them. We use up-to-date, research-based assessment tools to ensure accurate identification of your child’s needs.

Decoding & Spelling Assessments

  • Approximately $300 Decoding and Spelling (Encoding)

These assessments include a one-hour in-home session to review prior evaluations and conduct testing. Within ten business days, you will receive a 1.5 to 3-page report outlining professional impressions, recommendations, and targeted goals. These assessments are not diagnostic and are designed to guide tutoring and instructional planning.

  • Approximately $500 Full Literacy Assessment

These assessments include a 90-minute in-home session with comprehensive review and testing. Within ten business days, you will receive a detailed 3 to 5-page report with professional insights, recommendations, and structured goals. These evaluations support literacy development planning but are not diagnostic.

These literacy assessments are designed specifically to inform tutoring and instructional planning. If a formal diagnosis is required for a 504 Plan or IEP, we will refer you to trusted neuropsychologists. We also provide access to low-cost neuropsychological evaluations.

Some children with literacy challenges also show delays in expressive or receptive language skills, often referred to as language processing difficulties. Our Online Literacy Assessment Evaluation measures phonological awareness, foundational literacy skills, and writing for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. These assessments are completed over two sessions lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours total. Each evaluation provides detailed, actionable insight into your child’s specific literacy profile.
