Writing is a fundamental part of literacy and communication, but for many children across the NYC metro area—including Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island, the Bronx, New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester, Philadelphia, Martha’s Vineyard, and the Hamptons—developing writing skills often requires more than classroom instruction. This is especially true for neurodivergent learners, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences or learning disabilities. These students may struggle with written expression due to difficulties with organization, spelling, grammar, or working memory. At Brooklyn Letters, families are matched with independent providers offering specialized writing support that uses multisensory, research-based methods to strengthen skills and build confidence as effective communicators.
For students struggling at the word level with encoding (spelling), we highly recommend an Orton Gillingham approach with an emphasis on spelling tutoring. For students writing at the sentence level, there are a range of strategies and techniques that can improve sentence structure, clarity, and organization. For students struggling at the oral level of literacy, we work with licensed speech-language pathologists who help students with their oral and written forms of literacy.
Some students also need explicit support with vocabulary acquisition. For students with executive functioning (EF) challenges—such as planning, organizing ideas, and initiating tasks—support targets the appropriate modality or modalities (written, oral, or both) based on the student’s needs.
To further enhance writing skills, The Writing Pathway provides high-quality instruction for all students, utilizing a research-based approach combined with AI tools. These tools help educators save time by generating writing practice tailored to any curriculum or content area for grades 3–12.
Writing Intervention & Instructional Approach
Writing is a highly complex academic skill that requires students to coordinate multiple processes at once, including spelling, handwriting, grammar, organization, idea development, and self-monitoring. Many students—especially those with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, or executive functioning challenges—struggle because these processes are not yet automatic.
Our expert writing tutors use structured, research-based instructional approaches to break writing into manageable components while helping students integrate those skills into meaningful, purposeful writing tasks. Instruction is always individualized and adjusted based on the student’s age, grade level, learning profile, and academic goals.
Our writing intervention supports students with:
- Transcription and spelling challenges
Students learn how to translate ideas into written language through explicit instruction in spelling patterns, encoding strategies, and handwriting or keyboarding fluency. Reducing transcription effort allows students to focus more fully on content and organization. - Sentence-level and paragraph-level writing
Tutors explicitly teach sentence construction, sentence variety, and paragraph development so students can communicate ideas clearly and effectively. This includes work on grammar, syntax, and expanding simple sentences into more complex structures. - Executive functioning and planning skills
Many students struggle to start writing, organize ideas, or sustain effort over longer assignments. Tutors provide structured planning tools, visual organizers, and step-by-step routines to support task initiation, organization, time management, and revision.
Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD)
Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is a well-researched instructional framework designed to help students become more strategic, independent, and confident writers. Rather than simply correcting writing, SRSD teaches students how to think during the writing process.
Through SRSD, students learn to:
- Plan their writing using clear strategies and organizers
- Draft with a focus on structure, clarity, and purpose
- Revise and edit their work using explicit checklists and criteria
- Self-monitor progress, effort, and accuracy throughout a writing task
SRSD also emphasizes goal-setting, positive self-talk, and reflection, which helps students build confidence and reduce writing-related anxiety. Over time, students learn to apply these strategies independently across different writing tasks, subjects, and academic settings.
