As language specialists, we bring additional skills to the table. Because of our unique educational and therapeutic background, we are effective educators when teaching language. Language is the foundation for speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Our language specialists treat preschoolers through high school students, transitioning to college, including students diagnosed with dyslexia. Our therapy is individualized. We treat and remediate the child’s/student’s literacy weaknesses, while taking advantage of the child’s/student’s strengths and interests in a supportive environment. We want your child to feel good about literacy and we ascribe to a balanced literacy approach; we take advantage of a variety of techniques and tools that aid in literacy development, including a multisensory approach. The Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read discusses evidence based techniques to facilitate literacy development.
We work with students who have difficulty with reading comprehension (students who demonstrate difficulty processing and understanding what they are reading) and fluency (students who are slow readers, inaccurate readers, and/or don't sound natural when reading aloud). Students may need remediation and strategies to overcome difficulties learning written vocabulary, grammar, and structure, e.g. sentence and paragraph level comprehension.
In addition, our language specialists collaborate with local psychologists and learning specialists. Our reading tutor, Jo-Ann is trained in Orton-Gillingham (PAF), Wilson Reading, Sounds in Motion, and Great Leaps.
PRE-LITERACY
Pre-literacy development includes interest in books, comprehension of what words mean, understanding and telling stories, letter recognition, and phonological awareness. Phonology is a branch of linguistics: the study of the sound structure of a given language. Phonological awareness is a critical component of literacy. It contains many components, such the ability to rhyme, awareness of sounds and capacity to manipulate sounds in words. Preschoolers with delays in language development typically have difficulty with phonological awareness. We also facilitate acquisition of sight words, which relies heavily on visual memory.
LITERACY STAGE

WRITING
In addition, we treat students who demonstrate difficulty with their writing abilities. Treatment focuses on vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and organization.
