FREE Catching Up and Getting Ahead Program

Free NYC Summer 2022 Literacy Program
More comprehensive that The Simple View of Reading (Decoding x Language Comprehension = Reading Comprehension) is The Simple View of Schooling: Good Teachers x Good Curriculum = Good Schools. I learned this equation from a sixth grade class that told it to a famous visitor. Actually, they added another factor, Good Teachers x Good Curriculum x Good Kids, but I believe that good teachers and good curriculum produce good kids.
Since most of the teachers I have met are good, the failures in education must be due to the curriculum. After spending five minutes observing a current math or reading lesson, any sane person would reach that conclusion. We are cheered that teachers will finally resume their role in teaching, and that direct instruction in phonics will replace guessing sound/symbol correspondence through pictures.
As we revel over the renewed emphasis on Decoding, let’s not forget the Language Comprehension factor in the Simple View of Reading. Everyone Reading has a suggestion. Take our…

Participants will learn a variety of quick and easy activities and drills to teach phonological awareness and phonics effectively and efficiently. They will also learn to teach vocabulary formally and informally, using morphology, syntax and context clues, explicit instruction and correct practice in targeted words, and by embedding vocabulary development into every activity during the school day. The syllabus is attached.
As the New York City Department of Education returns to direct, explicit instruction in basic decoding skills, they are recommending three programs: Fundations (Wilson Reading System), PAF (Preventing Academic Failure) or Really Great Reading.
A description of Really Great Reading is below, with links to its different programs. The June Fundations workshops have already started. Please check the Wilson Reading System website for future events. You still have time for the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). IMSE courses are a deep dive into phonics instruction, which will prepare you to teach any program.
Really Great Reading

- Delivers research-based, scientifically aligned instruction in just 15-20 minutes a day.

Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) - Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Plus

Description for each course:
The IMSE Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Plus Course and Program is 30-hours of a hands-on, interactive, and personalized class that provides a complete understanding of IMSE’s enhanced Orton-Gillingham method, the essential five components to literacy, and the tools necessary to apply it in the classroom. Educators will have a basic knowledge of how to assess and teach students in all three tiers of RTI and students with dyslexia. Participants will evaluate and teach students in phonological skills, phonics/word recognition, spelling, writing, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This course includes an additional asynchronous component for fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
