Vocabulary knowledge plays a very important part in reading. As developing readers struggle to decode a word, they are simultaneously taking an inventory of the oral vocabulary they already know, and hoping to match it to the word they are reading. The less vocabulary they have been exposed to, the more likely they will have a harder time decoding words and developing reading fluency.
