Journals

In this class, we will create daily journal entries. Journals are a fantastic way to explore drawing and writing skills, appropriate pencil grip, storytelling, and social-emotional development. Each journal entry consists of an illustration and added text, such as descriptive labels, or sentences in the form of a story, depending on the skill level of the child. I will assist with creating representational imagery and adding details to drawings, while supporting beginning spelling skills, letter formation, identification, and sound-letter correspondence. Appropriate tripod grasps and pencil grasp can also be supported if necessary.

Our Coach Drew

Drew is an early childhood educator with over fifteen years of teaching experience in New York City schools. He is certified by New York State to teach children from birth to second grade. Drew studied philosophy and studio art at Skidmore College, and has a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College. While he has worked primarily with Pre-K students, Drew has also taught students in kindergarten and first grade. He has spent his career teaching in independent schools that utilize emergent curriculums. This involves developing classroom activities and learning experiences based upon the natural interests of the child. Drew has a deep appreciation for the enthusiasm and creativity that are involved in this child-centered approach to learning.

Drew believes that the early childhood years are crucial in helping students create a solid educational foundation and a love of learning. He thoughtfully develops activities to address the social and academic needs of each child. Drew has used Handwriting Without Tears, Sounds in Motion, and inventive spellings strategies to address reading and writing skills. He also supports the development of math skills by exploring patterns, geometry, basic addition and subtraction, skip counting, one-to-one correspondence, simple fractions, measuring, and time concepts. Additionally, Drew has implemented the RULER and Mood Meter systems, developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to help his students recognize their own feelings as well as the emotions of others.

In his classrooms, Drew has worked with many students with special needs, including students who were receiving speech/language therapy, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and psychological counseling. By collaborating with SEITs and therapists during the school year, Drew has been able to address the different learning needs of each student across all developmental domains.
