STRATEGIES FOR MULTIPLICATION

STRATEGIES FOR MULTIPLICATION

Instruction Type: Private or Pods. Online.

Recommended for: Students entering grades 3-6.

Multiplication is no longer just about stacking numbers and using the standard algorithm. When students have an in-depth understanding of the relationships between digits and place values, they can discover many ways to multiply numbers. This course is for students who need to build fluency with multiplication strategies and who have a hard time double checking their work or verifying for reasonability. In this course we will explore multiple methods for multiplying such as using the array model, using multiple equations, the standard algorithm, and repeated addition. We’ll also explore and discuss the ways in which each strategy is similar or different and students will be encouraged to draw connections and use more efficient and sophisticated strategies as they progress throughout the course. This course focuses on whole numbers but can be customized to address mixed fractions and decimals.
