At Manhattan Letters (owned and operated by Brooklyn Letters), we offer a variety of speech-language evaluations. Our speech, language, and feeding evaluations are out-of-network, and we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company. We also offer bilingual services! We work with all ages, evaluate and treat:
Speech disorders occur when a person has trouble producing speech sounds and blending them to form intelligible words. Speech disorders include apraxia of speech, dysarthria, and articulation or phonological disorders.
Expressive language delays/disorders, also known as expressive language delays, are characterized by difficulties in using spoken language, such as decreased vocabulary and decreased spoken utterance length. Language disorders are classified into two types: expressive and mixed expressive-receptive language disorders. These conditions can be inherited, developmental, or result from traumatic brain injuries. As child ages, students can develop difficulties with their writing skills due to difficulties expressing themselves.
Receptive language delays/disorders (part of expressive/receptive language delays/disorders) demonstrate difficulty with comprehension or understanding the words or complexity of what the speaker says. Children, compared to peers, have difficulties answering questions, following directions, and underlying sequential information. As child ages, students can develop difficulties with their reading comprehension skills due to auditory comprehension issues.
Voice or resonance disorders. Voice or resonance disorders are issues with how one’s voice sounds. Someone’s voice may sound hoarse, lose their voice easily, speak through their nose or too loudly, or be unable to make sounds.
Social communication refers to verbal and nonverbal communication in social situations. This includes how well one communicates socially, follows conversation rules and story-telling (an aspect of expressive language known as narratives), tells jokes, and speaks with different people in different situations.
Cognitive-Communication disorder. A person with a cognitive-communication disorder may struggle with organization, memory, attention, problem-solving, and other thinking skills. A traumatic brain injury, a stroke, dementia, or a congenital can cause this.
Feeding disorders, also known as dysphagia, are difficulties chewing, sucking, and swallowing foods and liquids. We also work with picky eaters.
TIER 1 EVALUATIONS & ASSESSMENTS (Home, School, English, Multilingual) Performed by Licensed Speech-Language Pathologists/Therapists
The evaluation includes at least a one-hour in-home or a-school visit during which we meet with you and your child, review previous reports, testing, and so on, and produce a 1.5- to 3-page report with professional impressions, recommendations, and goals (if services are recommended) within ten business days. This report can be presented to private schools and professionals outside of Manhattan Letters. It is not appropriate for IEPs (see TIER2). It contributes to establishing the need for significant but mild articulation and expressive language therapy and updating current therapy objectives.
TIER 2 SPEECH LANGUAGE EVALUATION & ASSESSMENT (Home, School, English, Multilingual) Performed by Licensed Speech-Language Pathologists/Therapists.
TIER2 Evaluations are more in-depth than TIER1 Evaluations and include literacy assessments performed by licensed language therapists. TIER2 evaluations are ideal for private CPSE and CSE assessments. A TIER2 Evaluation is suggested when a child has more than a few speech sound errors that are inappropriate for his or her age and significant concerns about understanding and using oral and written language, especially when the child is 48 months or older.
All of our TIER 2 Evaluations occur in a quiet area of your home during a single visit. If you are looking for office space, please see the list below. These visits will last 1-3 hours, with breaks for your child. Occasionally, a child cannot complete the testing within the time allotted for assessments.
