ONLINE GROUP CLASSES

ZoomieBaby is a 4-week “baby and me” class that builds community and offers guided support while teaching parents about early speech, language, and feeding development. Brain-based language and learning stimulation strategies are presented in a 45-minute group session. Each class ends with activity demonstrations and a summary handout with links to resources. This class will help new Pandemic Parents build a supportive community while learning how to nurture their baby for optimal language, learning, and growth in these difficult times. Your baby is unique and all families are different. Individual coaching sessions are available with Dr. Melissa to help you make the most of your time with your baby.

In this class, we will create daily journal entries. Journals are a fantastic way to explore drawing and writing skills, appropriate pencil grip, storytelling, and social-emotional development. Each journal entry consists of an illustration and added text, such as descriptive labels, or sentences in the form of a story, depending on the skill level of the child. I will assist with creating representational imagery and adding details to drawings, while supporting beginning spelling skills, letter formation, identification, and sound-letter correspondence. Appropriate tripod grasps and pencil grasp can also be supported if necessary.

Let’s take a look at some picture books together. Reading stories is a great way to develop reading comprehension, inspire creativity and imagination, learn about new subjects, and foster a love of reading. We’ll read books that share a common theme and explore follow-up activities to expand on the concepts from the books. Some of the themes we can explore include: how seeds grow, dinosaurs, counting books, series and author studies, wordless books.

The alphabet is amazing! Let’s explore it together. In this class, we will use a multi-sensory approach to learn about different letters of the alphabet. We’ll explore different ways to form a letter, including uppercase and lowercase, using writing tools as well as other materials, such as clay and sticks. As we learn the sound that each letter makes, we will pair it with a corresponding body movement to help students remember the sounds. We will also work together to create a word list for each letter, thinking of words that begin with the letter, or responding to clues to help expand each list.

This class is designed to give your fingers, hands, and arms a good workout. There are many ways to strengthen these muscles, and they’re all a lot of fun! We will use a variety of materials, including tweezers, spoons, toothpicks, cotton swabs, clay, clothespins, eye droppers, connecting blocks, scissors, and other common household materials to support fine motor development. These activities can in turn help students feel more comfortable holding a pencil for writing and drawing tasks, while also developing hand-eye coordination skills.

How does a child learn to read?  Reading begins before children associate oral language with print.  By guiding students to develop an understanding of how the language system functions, they build capacity for internalizing the building blocks of literacy.  In this class, children will work their way up the hierarchy of foundational literacy skills to build a strong foundation for fluent reading.  Instruction will focus on skills and activities such as: rhyming, syllables, phoneme manipulation, the alphabetic principle, print concepts, phonics, vocabulary development, read-aloud, retelling, and emergent writing.

In these classes children will learn reading and spelling skills through fun, multi-sensory and individualized lessons. I will follow the common core curriculum to build the skills your child needs to become a fluent reader. We will use Foundations materials and activities to introduce and practice new concepts such as sound blending, syllable segmentation and spelling rules. We will also play at least one reading or spelling game in each lesson, such as bingo, tic-tac-toe, or memory. These games are a fun way of remembering new sounds or words. Students will also actively learn reading and listening comprehension. We will use dialogue, graphic organizers, drawings and even dramatic acting to make sure students are able to meaningfully connect to the texts they read. With a small class size, each child will receive individual attention to their specific learning needs. I conduct a private reading evaluation with each child prior to the start of this class and their progress will be closely monitored and shared with parents throughout the semester.

In these classes children will learn grade level math skills in a fun and interactive online environment. I use a multi-sensory approach so that all types of learners (visual, oral, kinesthetic) can gain a full understanding of even the more challenging math topics that come up in early elementary math. I will use physical props to explain concepts such as grouping, songs to help with memorization, and various types of graphics to help visualize concepts and equations. Before a new math topic is introduced, I will always make sure that students have mastered the previous foundational skills required to execute the new skill being taught. For example, before we begin leaning how to count money, I will make sure students have mastered counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s. This proactive method of sequential learning will help prevent confusion and frustration. In this class we will also explore the logic and reasoning behind math concepts so that students can approach problems with confidence, knowing that they have a full understanding of the topic. Students will able to apply the logic and reasoning skills they learn in this class not only to math problems but to problem solving that will come up in other subjects as well.

Dialogic Reading is a way of reading books to children that creates specific dialogue with their teacher and peers. The teacher prompts students with guiding comments and questions to stimulate conversations on various learning topics. I will use this method of teaching to build vocabulary, reading comprehension, print awareness, oral language skills, social-emotional skills, logic and problem solving. In addition to teaching academic and social skills this class aims to create a positive relationship in your child’s life to reading and learning.

Multiplication is no longer just about stacking numbers and using the standard algorithm. When students have an in-depth understanding of the relationships between digits and place values, they can discover many ways to multiply numbers. This course is for students who need to build fluency with multiplication strategies and who have a hard time double checking their work or verifying for reasonability. In this course we will explore multiple methods for multiplying such as using the array model, using multiple equations, the standard algorithm, and repeated addition. We’ll also explore and discuss the ways in which each strategy is similar or different and students will be encouraged to draw connections and use more efficient and sophisticated strategies as they progress throughout the course. This course focuses on whole numbers but can be customized to address mixed fractions and decimals.

The greatest challenge with word problems usually is not solving the calculations but rather interpreting of the story. Students often have difficulty unpacking the actions in the story and identifying the equation or calculations that match the problem. In this course students will explore multi step word problems involving all four operations. Course content can be customized to address fractions or, for students in grades 5-6, decimals and percentages. Students will be given multistep word problems to solve with strategies and tips for tackling the problem in approachable and effective ways. Students will receive plenty of think-time and be held accountable for defending their strategies and explaining their thinking which, in turn, gives them the necessary tools to unpack complex word problems and feel confident solving them in the future.

In this course students will explore the concept of fractions by exploring visual fraction models. Throughout this course, students will understand the concept of numerators and denominators, how fractions fit into a number line, comparing fractional amounts, and adding or subtracting with like and unlike denominators. This course is customizable for students with varying degrees of comfort and familiarity with fractions and takes on a constructivist approach to math instruction, meaning that the instructor is building on what students already know and the child will construct their own knowledge through exploration and trial and error, ensuring long-lasting learning. For students in grades 5-6, this course can be extended to address decimals and percentages.

In this course we will explore place value through interactive games and activities. The instructor will use number lines and place value boxes to explore the meaning of the place value and help the student construct ideas about the relationships numbers have to each other. Content is customizable depending on student/pod grade level, but will include comparing numbers, rounding, and decimals.
