I cannot express how grateful and rewarding my experience with Brooklyn Letters has been. Her tutor Ms. Daria is so knowledgeable, amazing, kind and awesome. I know my daughter is sad that she can no longer work with Ms. Daria, as she looked forward to their sessions every week. Thank you again!

We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

Christina was absolutely wonderful. She went out of her way to win my son over and it worked. He looked forward to her visits and his speech improved so much under her care. We cannot say enough good things about Effie, the ASL teacher, who was so engaged and effective with our 2 year old daughter from the very first session! Effie gladly included our whole family in the sessions! Her expertise and fantastic … More personality gave our daughter a way to communicate that she was so desperately seeking. The coordinators at Brooklyn Letters were so helpful and communicative…I would highly recommend their services!

Samantha Dalmas was fantastic! We saw her for a feeding therapy evaluation and while she doesn’t think my daughter needs more feeding therapy sessions at this time, but she gave me lots of tips to try. If my daughter's doctors want … More to see more progress at her next appointment, I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to Samantha again.

Brooklyn Letters was recommended to me through a friend's speech therapist friend in NJ. The articulation evaluation for my daughter went well. We were pleased with Kristin's services.

Melissa was wonderful. Our daughter warmed to her immediately and by the time she left, had already started "practicing" some of the techniques Melissa had shown her. I will not hesitate at all to reach out to Melissa again, should … More the need arise.

Aileen was INCREDIBLY helpful to us, both in assessing possible origins of my grandson's food aversions, as well as informing us of various available interventions to consider.
I can’t thank you and Brooklyn Letters enough for connecting
… More us with Aileen. In all our feeding therapy journey we have not gotten anything near the kind of benefit that we did from her. Her knowledge, professionalism, and responsiveness have put us on the path of progress with my grandson and has also made us feel genuinely well cared for.

We were amazed with Allison! She met my son at 2 1/2 years old, not speaking much at all, and over a computer, and she was able to develop a bond and friendship, so much so that he would look forward to his weekly computer time with Allison. … More I was not sure how the speech therapy would go- but we are so happy that we tried it out and continued. It allowed my son to gain confidence in his speech, make a new friend :), and also give him the skills and a bit of understanding of how to shape his mouth or where to place his tongue to make the proper sounds. We were extremely happy with Allison- she was fantastic to work with.

My sessions with Karen have been extremely helpful. My speech has improved tremendously. In fact, I just finished 2 hours of conducting interviews with a consulting client via MS Teams and I have an upcoming conference call. Both my … More neurologist and neurosurgeon remarked about how good my speech is. Much of the day it is perfect, although I still have some rough spots when I get tired or speak too quickly. One of my granddaughters is a speech pathology student at Ithaca College. She sat in on 2 sessions while she was home for winter break, and she was very impressed with Karen.

We were delighted with Christie. First, and most importantly, our son made great strides under her guidance. So great, that we felt he no longer needed help! She was incredibly patient and kind with him and our son really responded to … More her. Christie was also great with me and my wife. She provided thorough and informative updates on our son's progress and which exercises she was using with him, so we could reinforce what she was teaching him. All in all, we had a fabulous experience with Christie and would highly recommend her.

We've been working with Theo from Brooklyn Letters for close to 4 months now and the results are apparent; our daughter has vastly improved her speech in a relatively short amount of time. We make "Theo Day" a celebration … More in our house with pancakes for breakfast, and the enthusiasm is matched in the sessions. Theo is fun, patient, professional, and caring, and he gives us the tools to take the lessons beyond the session. Thank you Theo, and Brooklyn Letters, for helping our daughter express herself.

The work that Allison P. did with our daughter over the years has been invaluable to us. Our daughter had such a good relationship with Allison, and it allowed them to work really well together - even remotely these past 6 months. This … More year, Allison went above and beyond by helping us throughout the neuropsych eval we did, trying to re-open our daughter's IEP at her school, and eventually landing her at our chosen school. She was in contact with our daughter's teachers, with the neuropsychologist, and made herself available as a reference to speak on behalf of our daughter's learning differences.
Allison stopped by our house last week to give our daughter cupcakes and say goodbye, and I literally cried with appreciation for what an amazing speech therapist she has been. She has been our daughter's biggest champion. The new families that she will work with this year are lucky to have her.

Sydney was great! Our son was sad to end his sessions with her, which says a lot. We appreciated her honest assessment of his skill level, and he now has materials to self monitor and practice. Thank you!

Our experience with Theo was terrific. Theo was great with my son. He developed a positive relationship with him based on sincerity, respect, trust and a deep personal connection. In their lessons, Theo was encouraging, creative and kind. … More He helped our son understand how to differentiate the sounds he made when he spoke, and gave him great exercises to practice every week between lessons. Our son was sorry to have the lessons come to an end, but recognized that Theo had helped him as much as possible and it was time for him to stop. Theo explained to him (and us) how to keep working to get the last 5%, and encouraged him to keep working on the exercises on his own. I have recommended Theo to another parent who noticed my son's improvement and inquired for her own son.
We are all grateful to have gotten to know Theo, and we greatly appreciate all the work he did to help our son.

"I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Michelle Macroy-Higgins. We are extremely pleased with her work with our daughter. I was so grateful for my daughter to have a speech therapist who is a researcher (specialty in late … More talkers), graduate professor and practitioner. Her expertise was clearly evident in our conversations and work with our daughter. She was very responsive to my questions and often sent articles and other materials about language development that I found helpful. Thankfully, my daughter's speech improved tremendously. Michelle developed such a warm relationship with my daughter. My daughter was always excited to see Michelle and would greet her at the door with a big hug. Lastly, I would add that Michelle always demonstrated empathy with me as a mother who was initially worried about her daughter's language development. I could go on and on about how pleased we were with Michelle's work."

Alexa has been an enthusiastic, reliable, well prepared and caring teacher for our 6 year old daughter. She has been able to improve and increase our daughter's confidence lesson by lesson with patience and competence; through varied … More and productive didactic practice. Alexa has engaged our daughter in several activities that always kept her motivated and eager to learn literacy. My wife and I, both of us are educators, feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to observe Alexa's pedagogical skills. Alexa has had a big impact on our daughter literacy growth. Thank you Brooklyn Letters!

We were absolutely DELIGHTED with Marsha's services. She was wonderful. We found her to be kind, fun, engaging, very knowledgeable. She provided us with clear instructions and additional written handouts each week. She engaged our … More son with different techniques and toys, and showed us how to use her techniques when we were interacting with him. I actually just texted her on Saturday - Our son finally said "more" - one of the target words we had been working on with her. It was a total joy to hear, and I had to share it with her - she wrote back immediately to congratulate us. I am so appreciative of her expertise, and wish we could have seen her for longer. I recommended her to another family in our neighborhood who is looking for a speech therapist.

What Is Dyslexia and Why It’s Often Missed in Schools

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects reading, writing, and spelling due to weaknesses in phonological processing — not intelligence or motivation. It’s one of the most common learning disabilities, affecting 15–20% of the population. Children with dyslexia often go undiagnosed in New York City public schools, despite clear signs like letter reversals, reading avoidance, or difficulty sounding out words.

Dyslexia is not caused by poor teaching or laziness; it is simply a different way the brain interprets written language. Studies show that dyslexic children often excel in other subjects, particularly when given access to specialized instruction that matches how they learn. While NYC schools have made strides with new screening policies, many classrooms still lack the tools and training to provide effective, evidence-based support.

As explained in our guide to understanding dyslexia, dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that makes it hard to read, write, and spell — and it’s often misunderstood. Dyslexic children are bright and capable, but they process language differently. With the right support, these children can excel academically and emotionally.

Dyslexia affects approximately 5% to 15% of the U.S. population, including both children and adults. This means roughly 8 to 12 million Americans are impacted by some degree of dyslexia.

A commonly cited figure used by institutions like the International Dyslexia Association and featured in resources such as LD OnLine affirms that:

  • Up to 1 in 5 people (or 20%) may show some signs of dyslexia-related learning differences.
Dyslexia remains the most prevalent learning disability in U.S. schools.

Though these numbers are widely accepted by educational researchers and advocacy organizations, they are estimates based on population studies and meta-analyses, not precise national surveillance.

Early Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

The earlier dyslexia is identified, the better the outcome. Children often show clear warning signs long before reading becomes a school-based skill, and recognizing these signs early allows for more targeted, effective intervention.

  • Struggles with rhyming or remembering letters in preschool: Kids who can’t identify rhyming words or frequently confuse letters like “M” and “W” may be showing early signs of phonological weaknesses. These challenges can make it harder to grasp reading when formal instruction begins.
  • Confuses letters or sounds (e.g., b/d, p/q): Letter reversals beyond age 7 and sound substitutions during reading are common indicators. Persistent confusion suggests a deeper phonological processing issue rather than a temporary mix-up.
  • Has trouble sounding out simple words: If your child guesses words based on context or pictures, rather than sounding them out, that’s a red flag. Decoding difficulties are at the core of most dyslexia cases.
  • Read slowly, even with familiar material: Children with dyslexia often take much longer to read even well-practiced texts. This isn’t about effort — their brains require more time to process written language.
  • Frequently misspells or avoids writing altogether: Writing avoidance and inconsistent spelling patterns are strong indicators of underlying language processing issues. You might notice they spell the same word differently in one sentence.
  • Strong verbal skills but weak reading comprehension: Many dyslexic students are articulate and bright but struggle to recall or understand what they’ve read. This mismatch between spoken and written ability is a classic dyslexia profile.
  • Avoids reading aloud or gets frustrated easily with reading tasks: Frustration, self-doubt, and even tantrums around reading often mask real, invisible learning challenges. Children usually know they’re behind, even if they don’t know why.

If you’ve noticed several of these signs in your child, don’t wait for them to “catch up.” Dyslexia doesn’t fix itself, but with proper support, kids can become skilled, confident readers who enjoy learning again.

Training, Screening, and Interventions

Recent research from the United States on dyslexia and dyslexia tutoring underscores significant developments in teacher preparation, screening implementation, and innovative intervention strategies. One prominent study by Chambre and Anderson (2025) titled Identifying sources of preservice teachers’ dyslexia knowledge to guide teacher education reveals that many preservice teachers in the U.S. have limited, inconsistent exposure to structured dyslexia training during their teacher preparation programs. The study emphasizes the need for formalized instruction in dyslexia to better equip future educators.

In another study, Strong (2025) explores the evolving landscape of dyslexia screening in U.S. schools, specifically focusing on California’s 2025 statewide screening initiative. The dissertation, Understanding the Landscape of Dyslexia Screening in the United States: Practitioners’ Perceptions, Training, and Implementation Practices, highlights widespread discrepancies in implementation practices and points to a lack of adequate training among educators responsible for conducting screenings. This research reflects broader challenges facing U.S. states in uniformly adopting early detection practices.

TESTIMONIALS

She is a total pleasure to work with. After a few months working with Jill, my son is reading above grade level and LOVES to read. Mission accomplished!

- Melissa S.Highly recommend Jill.

Cassie is a reading specialist who has worked one on one with our 6-year-old son for the last 9 months (Aug 2016-May 2017). Our son brings challenging avoidance behaviors and impulsivity to their sessions. Cassie uses the Orton-Gillingham approach and improvises with clever multi-sensory ideas to engage him. Through practice, she learned that if she uses gentle squeezes on his arm corresponding to syllables/letter sounds, it allows him to stay engaged. She is always very flexible, while firm, and creative in adjusting or rearranging tasks based on his needs and attention level. She makes a point of creating success for her students and having the session ended on a positive note. He has made incredible progress in his phonology and reading, which he then applies in school, using the specific tools Cassie has taught him. He loves reading and is very proud of his skills. She has provided detailed reports after each session, along with strategies and activities to practice. She is an advocate for special needs children through and through, and amazing in her dedication and practice.

- Emily, motherAn advocate for special needs children through and through, and amazing in her dedication and practice.

She established a close relationship with her and helped her to jump several reading levels. Thanks to Rachel, my daughter is now a confident reader! I am very happy that I reached out to you and I will certainly recommend Brooklyn Letters in the future.

- Joseph, fatherRachel has been an amazing tutor for my daughter

Our son, Logan, has been working with Cathy for just over a year now. Logan's twin sister, Audrey, has had the pleasure of Cathy’s care a slightly shorter time than that. Through the last year, we have noticed a definite improvement in all areas of the twin’s communication skills including verbal comprehensibility, aural comprehension, and overall learning skills including reading. Some of this can be marked back to inherent developmental growth and change in schools, but a large part we believe to be due to Cathy's good work. The twins worked with another SLP for years and, although a wonderful person and therapist in her own right, her play-based approach often made improvement in the kids hard to gauge. Cathy's approach is much more traditionally pedagogic and started with her conducting many diagnostic tests to get a clearer baseline to read/picture of the kid's abilities and issues. From there, she developed a very well-reasoned course of therapy for both Audrey and Logan and they continue to benefit from Cathy's skills and experience. Beyond her obvious professional expertise, Cathy has proven to be a kind and caring therapist and has extended herself when asked to participate in team meetings with our son's school. Cathy has also referred us most recently to an OT that we are beyond happy with, further proving her commitment to the overall well-being of her students.
In summary, we consider ourselves very lucky to be working with an SLP of Cathy's professional expertise and personal quality.

How to Get a Dyslexia Diagnosis in NYC

Dyslexia Tutors in Brooklyn, NYC, Brooklyn Letters

If you’re wondering how to get a dyslexia diagnosis in NYC, the process starts by gathering evidence of your child’s reading struggles and pursuing a full evaluation. Schools may provide assessments, but families often turn to private neuropsychological evaluations for more detailed results and quicker timelines. A formal diagnosis is essential for securing accommodations and targeted interventions.

A diagnosis can also help reduce frustration for both the child and their caregivers, providing clarity and a path forward. At Brooklyn Letters, we can connect you with trusted evaluators who specialize in dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. An accurate diagnosis opens the door to specialized instruction, classroom accommodations, and emotional validation. It’s a key first step toward meaningful change. Visit our full article on how to get a dyslexia diagnosis in NYC to learn more.

Effective Dyslexia Tutoring Strategies

As outlined in effective dyslexia tutoring strategies, successful dyslexia instruction must be explicit, systematic, and cumulative — focusing on the building blocks of language. This means structured phonics, direct teaching of spelling patterns, and the use of multi-sensory techniques that actively engage visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways. Programs like Orton-Gillingham are effective because they offer this structure and flexibility.

Consistency and repetition are key in helping students master foundational skills. These methods also encourage self-monitoring and metacognition, helping children become more independent readers. Progress is built step by step, ensuring students solidify one concept before moving to the next. A well-structured program also allows for reteaching when necessary, preventing learning gaps.

Best Tutoring Methods for Dyslexia

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, which is why we compare methods in our guide to the best tutoring methods for dyslexia. We break down the differences between Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Barton, and others so parents can make informed decisions. All are grounded in the science of reading and have strong research backing.

Our tutors are trained in multiple methods to provide flexibility in instruction. We help match your child with the right approach based on their strengths and challenges. Knowing how your child learns best helps ensure lasting results. We aim to demystify the process and empower families with options that work.

Structured Literacy vs. Dyslexia Tutoring

Dyslexia Tutors in Brooklyn, NYC, Brooklyn Letters

Many parents ask about the difference between structured literacy and traditional tutoring. Our breakdown in structured literacy vs. dyslexia tutoring explains why structured literacy is the gold standard for dyslexia. It’s not just phonics — it’s a comprehensive approach that builds reading from the ground up. It integrates phonology, sound-symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

This approach ensures students gain deep understanding, not just memorization. It teaches students how written language works, giving them tools to decode unfamiliar words and make sense of what they read. This kind of foundation supports long-term literacy development.

Helping a Child with Dyslexia at Home

There are also steps parents can take outside of tutoring. From audiobooks to reading apps, our guide to helping a child with dyslexia at home gives you actionable tools to support your child’s learning every day. You’ll also find our list of top free and paid dyslexia apps that actually work. Consistency and encouragement from caregivers can reinforce what’s learned during tutoring.

Simple daily reading routines and language games can create powerful learning moments at home. Regular reading practice and exposure to rich language help build vocabulary and comprehension. The home environment plays a crucial role in fostering a love of reading and learning.

How to Tutor a Kid with Dyslexia

If you’re a parent or educator looking for a step-by-step approach, check out our full article on how to tutor a kid with dyslexia. We explain how to teach phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension in a way that makes sense for struggling readers. Each lesson should build on the last, following a logical sequence that fosters retention. Patience and praise are key components in maintaining motivation and progress. Using error correction strategies and scaffolding techniques ensures students feel supported. Success builds confidence and helps overcome the fear of reading.

Certification ensures the tutor has received extensive training and understands how to apply OG principles effectively. This specialized training helps tailor instruction for each learner. Certified tutors are equipped to handle a wide range of literacy challenges. Their training supports structured, individualized, and responsive instruction.

Dyslexia and Tutoring

Dyslexia tutoring is different from general academic tutoring. As we explain in our dyslexia and tutoring article, it’s not about helping with homework — it’s about teaching your child to read using evidence-based methods. It addresses the root causes of reading struggles rather than just the symptoms. This kind of intervention is intensive, focused, and grounded in decades of research. It requires specialized training, careful planning, and ongoing assessment. The goal is to create readers who are both skilled and confident.

Dyslexia and Speech Therapy: What’s the Connection?

Dyslexia and speech-language difficulties often overlap. While dyslexia primarily affects reading and spelling, it frequently co-occurs with challenges in oral language, including expressive and receptive language skills. Many children with dyslexia also show signs of a Language Processing Disorder (LPD), which affects the ability to understand and use spoken language effectively. Learn more in our language processing disorder guide.

At Brooklyn Letters, we offer personalized speech-language therapy for children with dyslexia who also experience difficulty with listening comprehension, word retrieval, sentence structure, grammar, or storytelling. Our speech-language pathologists use research-backed strategies to build strong oral language foundations that support literacy development. For some children, strengthening oral language skills is essential before or alongside structured reading intervention.

Why Brooklyn Letters?

Choosing the right tutor for your child can make all the difference — especially when it comes to something as personal and foundational as reading. At Brooklyn Letters, we focus exclusively on dyslexia and language-based learning challenges, offering a level of expertise and customization that general tutoring companies can’t match.

  • Certified Experts in Structured Literacy: Every tutor is trained in research-backed approaches like Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Barton, and PAF. These methods are specifically designed for dyslexic learners, using step-by-step, multi-sensory instruction that builds fluency and confidence. Our tutors also stay current with the latest science of reading strategies.
  • We Come to You Across Brooklyn: Whether you live in Bay Ridge, Crown Heights, Williamsburg, or anywhere in between, our tutors provide high-quality, in-home instruction throughout the borough. For busy families or those who prefer online sessions, we offer remote tutoring with the same level of customization and engagement. No learning centers, no commuting — just effective instruction where it works best.
  • Personalized Plans, Not One-Size-Fits-All: Every student begins with an assessment to understand their strengths and challenges. Based on this, we create a custom learning plan that addresses decoding, spelling, comprehension, or writing — whatever the student needs most. We adjust as your child progresses, so instruction stays relevant and effective.
  • More Than Academics — We Build Confidence Too: Struggling readers often lose confidence and avoid literacy tasks out of fear or embarrassment. Our tutors are not just educators — they’re mentors who celebrate small wins and help students rebuild their belief in themselves. We work on executive functioning skills like planning and self-monitoring to support success beyond reading.
  • Ongoing Communication and Parent Support: You’re never in the dark with Brooklyn Letters. We provide regular updates on your child’s progress and welcome collaboration with parents, teachers, or other professionals. Transparency and communication are part of our service, not an extra.
  • Flexible Scheduling That Works for Real Life: We know families are busy, so we offer tutoring after school, on weekends, and during school breaks. Whether your child needs short-term intervention or long-term support, we can adapt to your schedule. Online and in-person sessions are easy to coordinate with minimal disruption.
  • Trusted by NYC Families and Professionals: Our reputation is built on results and word-of-mouth. Many of our clients come through school referrals, therapists, and other parents who’ve seen real change. We’ve supported families all over Brooklyn — and we’d be honored to support yours.

Brooklyn Letters is more than a tutoring service — we’re a dedicated team of dyslexia specialists helping children unlock the power of reading, writing, and confidence. When you’re ready, we’re here to help.

What We Cover in Our Dyslexia Tutoring Sessions

Our tutoring focuses on building foundational reading and writing skills, with attention to each student’s specific challenges. We teach phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words), decoding (sounding out words), spelling, reading fluency, and comprehension. Grammar, sentence structure, and writing organization are also included when needed.

We work with students from kindergarten through 12th grade and always begin with an assessment to understand your child’s strengths and needs. Then, we create a custom plan focused on mastery — not memorization. Whether your child struggles with sight words or can’t write a complete sentence, we help them make measurable progress.

What You Should Know Before Starting

You don’t need a formal dyslexia diagnosis to start tutoring. Many parents come to us after noticing reading difficulties or after getting mixed messages from their child’s school. Our experienced tutors can identify signs of dyslexia and create a plan based on what your child needs now — not months from now after lengthy evaluations.

We’re happy to collaborate with your school team or work independently. If your child has an IEP or 504 Plan, we can align our work to their existing goals and accommodations. If you’re still trying to get services from the school, we can guide you through the process or provide the support your child needs while you wait.

Most families benefit from 2–3 sessions per week, but we’re flexible based on your availability and goals. Every family begins with a free phone consultation, where we answer questions, explain our process, and recommend the right tutor for your child.
