Bilingual Spanish/English Stuttering Research
Stuttering is a common communication disorder that affects the flow of speech. It can be a difficult and embarrassing condition to deal with, but it’s important to remember that those who stutter are not alone.
Research has shown that bilingual Spanish/English adults who stutter may benefit from interventions focusing on both languages and the cognitive and social aspects. It is essential to understand that bilingual individuals often need specialized assessments and interventions to ensure they receive the best care for their stuttering.
Ewa Dynda, who stutters, a doctoral student at Adelphi University, NY, is currently undergoing her dissertation and reaching out to see if anyone knows any individuals who stutter.
Her dissertation topic is investigating the rehearsal method in English/Spanish bilingual adults who stutter and its effects on stuttering in both languages and any potential decrease in anxiety. She is looking for both monolingual (English speaking) and bilingual (English/Spanish) adults who stutter, ages 18 years or older. Individuals cannot be in therapy, but support/counseling groups are okay. Participation in the study is via ZOOM.
